Research on the Hindu Far-Right in the US
In early 2021, Audrey Truschke began a research project on the US-based Hindu Far-Right, focusing on a cluster of Hindu nationalist groups. At the heart of this research is the idea that Hindutva—a hateful political ideology that advocates Hindu supremacy and often centers around India—is both an American problem and a transnational phenomenon. One big twist in the project occurred when a Hindu nationalist group—on which Dr. Truschke was actively researching—sued her in a blatant attempt to frustrate her research agenda. That attempt failed. She continued to publish throughout the duration of the lawsuit, an example of a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) meaning a frivolous suit aimed at chilling public discourse. Dr. Truschke’s legal experiences and related documents are included here insofar as they may offer insight regarding the tactics, alliances, and, ultimately, failures of the US-based Hindu Far-Right.
